Can I bring it home from Ghana?

The export rule at the Ghana end and the import rule at the US end, by what the object is — because they are two different questions and an object can clear one and fail the other.

Work by a living artist

No export permit neededGhana's antiquities law reaches objects made before 1900. New work by a living artist falls outside it and leaves as ordinary goods. Ask for a dated invoice naming the artist, the year and the medium — US Customs requires the artist's name and whether the work is original.

Ceremonial or ritual objects

This is legally an antiquity, whatever its ageGhana's definition catches any object of indigenous origin used at any time in a traditional ceremony, with no age limit at all. A mask carved last year that has been danced needs an export permit from the Museums and Monuments Board — apply at least three months ahead. And be careful: if the permit is refused, the Director may require you to sell the object to the National Museum at Ghanaian market price.

Older and antique work

Permit required, and there is a catchMade before 1900 means an export permit from the Museums and Monuments Board, applied for at least three months ahead, with a photograph. A refused application can trigger compulsory sale to the National Museum. Ghana has no US import restriction, so the difficulty is all on the way out.

Craft, textiles and decorative objects

Leaves Ghana easily, costs you on entryCraft, textiles and decorative objects are usually outside the antiquities regime, so getting them out is simple. But they are also outside Chapter 97, so they are not duty-free entering the US — they pay their material rate. Check the timber species on anything carved.

The duty question

Whether you pay duty is a separate question from whether you may export, and it turns on a tariff classification rather than on the artist. What Chapter 97 covers, and what it does not.
