What the gallery's page does not tell you. Leaving Nigeria: no export permit needed. On arrival in the United States this is an original work of art under Chapter 97 of the tariff schedule and enters free of duty, and the 12.5% forced-labour duty that has applied to Nigeria since 24 July 2026 does not reach it either, under the informational-materials subheading. At 51cm on its longest side this travels flat in a portfolio or a cabin bag, which is the cheapest and safest way to move it. At $1,805 it sits in the middle of what Lagos galleries publish online.

Getting it home

No export permit neededNigeria's National Commission for Museums and Monuments Act reaches antiquities: archaeological material, relics of early Nigerian civilisation, work made before 1918, and objects of traditional art used in religious or ceremonial life. A new canvas by a living artist is none of those and leaves as ordinary goods. Take a dated invoice naming the artist, the year, the medium and the dimensions. Exporters routinely ask the Commission for a written no-objection anyway — it costs little and settles the argument at the airport rather than at the gate.
